Album Choice: Kate Bush - (The Hounds Of Love)

After careful consideration, I have made up my mind on which album choice to take. After a lot of thinking, as well as research into other possible choices, I have decided to focus my project around Kate Bush's 'The Hounds of Love'.

The album artwork featured above is the existing version, at the time of original release.

There are a few reasons as to why I have picked this particular album, despite having so much choice available to me.

I mentioned earlier on in my blog, about how I listened to the entirety of the album whilst working on the initial research. I did this in order to get a sense of what the album is trying to convey, and also my own emotions whilst listening to the album. This is important because research will ultimately effectively reflect onto my work.

I found Kate Bush's fifth studio album very emotional, natural sounding, and quite beautiful in a sense. Her sound is very unique, and when you watch her dance along to the music, you can see how she puts her heart and soul into her performance, something I admire about her.

Some of her songs are extremely experimental. For example, track #8 which is entitled, 'Waking the Witch', stands out a great deal.
The intro seems emotional with the soft piano, and the voices are telling her to wake up, as if she is in some kind of 'dream state'.

I thought that it could be very interesting to experiment with a few different styles, whilst using the songs on the album, as a basis for what the cover will be. I will look at coming up with cover drafts later on.

The image below shows me listening to 'Hounds of Love'.

As well as listening to the songs, I have also watched several music videos. See below for a screenshot taken from the official 'Hounds of Love' music video.

Kate Bush always has a meaning behind every song, and every music video. The same goes for her album artwork, and this is what I must take in mind when developing my interpretation. I want to capture the story, using illustration.
This makes research incredibly vital.

I will look at a few other album/single covers from Kate's discography, to compare with the Hounds of Love cover.

Very colourful, artwork has an oriental theme about it.

Her artwork for this one is mainly photographic.

The same goes for this cover.

This one stands out to me due to its simplicity. The child like drawing style makes this cover unique.

This cover features photography, again.
