Analysing The 'Hounds of Love' Album

In order to come up with some ideas of what I would like my cover to look like, I think it will be beneficial to study the content of the album, as I would like the artwork to reflect the music.

I have also bought a book which is all about her life and music. It is called 'Under the Ivy, The Life & Music of Kate Bush'.

I will be reading key sections of the book, to delve deeper into her life.

The album contains 12 songs, so I will listen to each one individually, as well as watch the linked music videos. I will discuss what each song could mean, as well as the themes they carry, and sum the album up. You will find my summary of the album at the bottom of the page.

  1. Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)
This song is one of her most popular from the album.
By watching the video, which helps me to understand more about what the songs is trying to conveys, It seems to me as if the song is all about struggle. To me, it makes me think of religious themes, and doesn't seem like an happy song.

From what I gathered from the song 'Running Up That Hill', Kate is talking about running up the hill, if she only could, and it could be a reference to overcoming life's problems.

In the music video, (which suggests themes of an abusive relationship due to the male dancer shadowing her, and not allowing her to break free), it shows Kate as she struggles to escape, and later on in the video, whilst trying to pass through a corridor, hoards of people hinder her progress.

2. Hounds of Love

Interestingly, I got another sense that this song again contained the theme of struggle. This is supported again by the music video. The video shows her, running away from a group of strange men. She is almost 'taken' away by the stranger. This could suggest relationship troubles, or even commitment problems, as she is always on the run from the men, who could be representing her troubles, or what she wants to leave behind. This is purely from my own interpretation, and might not reflect the views of others.
This is probably the most important song on the album, so I will be focusing a lot of research on it, as it is also the song that reflects upon the title of the album.

The lyric "It's coming for me in the trees", makes me wonder what it is that is exactly coming for her. It is a very important lyric in the song, alongside "Take my shoes off and throw them in the lake".

This song has quite a few references to natural forms. Trees, water etc.

3. The Big Sky

This song to me seems really upbeat. It makes me happy listening to it, and even in the music video, you can see Kate smiling a lot. This is one of my favourite songs from the album.

This song again, has themes of nature in them. Clouds, sky etc.

4. Mother Stands for Comfort

The song isn't as fast paced as some of the other songs on the album. It uses more electronic sounds, through the use of a synthesiser, and seems again, quite experimental in terms of sound, and techniques used.

5. Cloudbusting

6. And Dream of Sheep

This song has a very soft sound to it. it features a calm melody on the piano, whilst being accompanied by Kate's soft sounding voice. It appears to be quite a relaxing song, and a song that could influence the final album cover.

7. Under Ice

This song has natural themes to it.

8. Waking the Witch

This song to me sounds extremely experimental.
Whenever I listen to this song, I think of a dream like state. At the start of the song, the various people saying "wake up", could be telling this to Kate. That is what I think anyway. I have the feeling that basing the album on this song could allow me to produce an abstract/experimental theme.

I could not find the official music video on youtube, so I have embedded a video containing the audio below.

9. Watching You Without Me

10. Jig of Life

11. Hello Earth

Has themes of space travel, as you can hear snippets of NASA communication chatter, particularly at the start.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

After listening to the album, and looking into each song individually, I have noticed that quite a few songs on the album have quite an ethereal/natural theme to it. It also is very poetic in the way Kate writes her songs.
I love how every song carries a meaning, and I find it very interesting.

The album also contains some very experimental music, such as track 8, 'Waking the Witch'.
When I first listened to the track it actually took me by surprise. I knew Kate bush was experimental, but the song is unlike anything I have heard from this era. To me it was quite a scary song to listen to at first, then became more interesting.

Like every Kate bush song, the music videos and the songs always tie together, both carrying a theme. I have looked at the music videos to each track listed as an addition. I have done this so I can fully understand each song the best I can.
