Typography

Typography is a very important aspect when it comes to design concepts. In the case of album covers, it can be hugely important.

It is incredibly important, especially for emerging musicians. It gives the consumer some information on what the album is called, who it is by etc.

It can be simply placed onto the cover, or it can be implemented to work with the illustrations, as the covers featured below example this perfectly.

To understand what kind of typography I should use, I must consider a few important things.

  • The genre.
  • The target audience.
  • Can it work with the illustration.
  • Colour of text.

Her genre is a mixture between different styles, and is quite difficult to pinpoint.
Her genre split up into segments consists of pop-rock, art rock, college rock, indie rock, and alternative pop/rock, experimental rock, new romantic.

Her target audience is based toward a contemporary audience, as her style is quite experimental. This can be seen a lot in the early days of her career.
Her audience is widely varied, however today her music is aimed toward her more mature fans, as the bulk of her audience were fans at the height of her fame.

My text could possibly tie into the illustration, like in the examples above.
I think this will be a much more interesting way to convey text, and information.
As for the colour, it really depends on the background, but I have decided to use a monotone palette, so It will either be black, white or a shade of grey.

I was thinking of using a slightly classical style of typography, perhaps similar to the style below in the image.

This is very a very similar style to a font type used on the original 'Hounds of Love' album. (Note below)

I have found a font that closely resembles the font stye that I have shown an example of above.

It is called 'Apple Chancery Chancery', and it is located in the photoshop font list.
It is a little different to the example font found on the front over of 'Hounds of Love', however I feel that it could work very well, as the font seems to compliment the album well in my opinion.

When I discuss typography, it isn't always always in connection to he progress of my album cover, it counts for all of my criteria, as typography is featured on many things.

For example, my poster and product will most likely include the use of text, and so the importance of typography is huge.

When looking at band posters, even in this category, typography is very relevant.

You can see how the typography works with the illustration. this more prominent in the second example, as it is wrapped into her hair.

Typography is also used on many products, as part of their design. Below I will highlight a few examples.

It is also used in many advertising designs.
